It’s winter in Minnesota.
(Insert Sad face here.)
I am a summer or fall person myself personally.
Yes, the winter looks beautiful from a distance.
But actually leaving the house, and venturing outside isn’t my cup of tea. Especially with kids, flying solo.
I would compare it to ripping off a band-aid. You have to do it, mentally and physically preparing yourself for it, then just doing it. Often it can be pretty stressful.
Here are 5 things I HIGHLY RECOMMEND adding to your vehicle to help you survive winter or winter traveling with kids.
5. Ice scraper
There are many different sizes, varieties and styles, but use what works best for you.
Recently all 5’2 was able to try a Scrape-A- Round ice scraper in for my 2005 Mini-Van. Up until I got my mini-van I have always had a fuel efficient compact car. So scrapping off a mini-van takes a little bit more work and time than I am used to, and I will typically try to avoid it at all costs, just ask my husband.
What I liked
- Took up very little space. Yes, a typical ice scraper doesn’t take up that much space, but a typical ice scraper is also able to get lost and misplaced due to the shape/size that it has. Trust me, I loose mine, all the time.
What I didn’t like?
- I wasn’t able to scrape the entire front or back window with the scraper because their was an area of 12-24 inches in the middle where I was unable to reach due to the lack of extended handle like I am typically used to in the ice scrapers that I typically purchase.

4.An Extra hats, mittens or gloves.
Just in case someone forget their winter gear at home, school, a friends house, a store.. or where ever else they can.. extra is ALWAYS awesome.
Money saving tip: I love to pick up extra sets at garage sales, end of season sales, and on black Friday and save because typically we end up using them at some point.
3. Winter proof snacks
Yes winter-proof. Because not all snacks and beverages will survive in the frigid temperatures that come. Just in case you didn’t know this. Please trust me and take my word not to leave anything in a can (unless it is open). We keep empty sippy cups, bottled water, fruit snacks, and individually packaged crackers.
2. Blanket
Because you never know when you will need a blanket.
1. Jumper Cables
Just in case 😉
Extra: Reusable grocery bag.
